MMPV — Close MM Posting Period / Open New Material Period
MMPV closes the current Materials Management posting period and opens the next MM posting period for the selected company-code scope. It controls the material-master/MM posting period used by goods movements and related material postings. It does not perform Material Ledger actual-costing close or price determination, and FI posting periods are controlled separately.
This page covers MMPV, the transaction used to close a material ledger period during month-end closing. It focuses on the sequencing against periodic price determination, the tables the run touches, and the specific exception categories that block a clean close.

Purpose
MMPV closes the current Materials Management posting period and opens the next MM posting period for the selected company-code scope. SAP's current S/4HANA best-practice documentation calls the app/transaction Close Periods (MMPV) and shows it on the 'Close Period for Material Master Records' screen. It is an MM/material-master period control, not the Material Ledger actual-costing close.
When it is used
Use MMPV as part of the month-end/start-of-new-period MM control process when goods movements and other material postings must move to the next posting period. The MM period check is separate from FI posting-period control, so the FI period and MM period must both be appropriate for transactions that create accounting and material documents.
How to use it in practice
- Confirm the company codes/material-master period scope and the period that should become current.
- Run the close/open procedure according to the organization's month-end runbook; where a check/test option is provided, review the result before update.
- Enter the target period and fiscal year carefully—advancing the material period is a controlled period-end action.
- After execution, verify the current MM posting period for the affected company code(s).
- If postings to the previous MM period are required, review the controlled previous-period setting/process (for example MMRV where applicable) rather than attempting to move the current period backward casually.
Key data objects
The important control is the current material-master/MM posting period for the company-code/valuation context.
- Company code — identifies the organizational scope being advanced.
- Current and next MM posting period/fiscal year — the core period-control values.
- Previous-period posting permission — separate control that can allow limited backposting where configured.
- Material document posting date — determines which MM period a goods movement tries to post into.
- FI posting-period status — a separate control; an MM-period change does not automatically open or close FI.
How to prove it in the data
Capture the current MM period before MMPV, execute the approved period-close/open step, then display the period status again and test a representative goods movement with a posting date in the new period. If a posting still fails, separate the MM period error from FI period control, authorization, valuation, or application-specific checks instead of assuming MMPV failed.
ECC vs S/4HANA
MMPV remains current in S/4HANA. SAP's current best-practice documentation explicitly uses the Close Periods (MMPV) app/transaction to close the MM period and open a new posting period. Do not confuse this with Material Ledger actual costing/period-end activities, which use separate processes and applications.
Common pitfalls and how to diagnose them
- Calling MMPV a Material Ledger close — it controls the MM/material-master posting period, not actual-costing price determination.
- Assuming an open FI period means material postings can proceed — MM and FI period controls are separate.
- Advancing the wrong company code or target period because the fiscal year/period was not checked against the close calendar.
- Trying to use period control to fix a document-specific valuation, account-determination, or authorization error.
- Backdating a goods movement without checking whether previous-period posting is permitted in MM and FI.
Whose problem this is
Primary ownership is MM/Inventory Management period control, coordinated with Finance during month-end. Finance owns FI posting periods; Material Ledger/Actual Costing specialists own their separate close activities. Basis is generally involved only for scheduled execution or technical job failures.
