PP01 — Maintain Plan Data (Organizational Management)
PP01 is the classic SAP Organizational Management transaction for maintaining plan data by object type and infotype. It can create or change organizational objects and relationships such as organizational units and positions. SAP's current documentation still lists PP01 as Maintain Plan Data and uses it in S/4HANA organizational-data integration examples.

Purpose
PP01 maintains Organizational Management plan data through the object/infotype framework. An administrator selects a plan version and object type, then creates or changes object infotypes and relationships. SAP documentation lists PP01 as Maintain Plan Data (Menu) and current S/4HANA integration guidance uses PP01 to create organizational units for test/setup scenarios.
When it is used
Use PP01 for detailed object-oriented maintenance when you need direct control over OM infotypes and relationships. Common objects include organizational units, positions, jobs, work centers, and related plan-data objects depending on the installed HCM scenario. For routine organizational design, PPOME can provide a more visual Organization and Staffing interface.
How to use it in practice
- Select the correct plan version and object type before entering an object ID.
- Choose the infotype or relationship to display, create, or change.
- Maintain the validity period carefully; OM relationships and object attributes are time dependent.
- Use the Allowed Relationships/help functions rather than guessing relationship types.
- Save, then verify the object and its relationships in PPOME or an appropriate display transaction.
Key data objects
Organizational Management uses time-dependent objects and infotypes, so validity and plan version are as important as object ID.
- Plan version — normally the active/current organizational plan defined by the implementation.
- Object type and object ID — for example organizational unit or position.
- Infotype — such as Object (1000) or Relationships (1001), depending on the maintenance task.
- Validity dates — determine when an object attribute or relationship is effective.
- Relationship direction/type — defines how OM objects are connected in the organizational plan.
How to prove it in the data
Display the same object and key date after saving, then confirm its object attributes and relationships in the organizational structure. For integration scenarios, verify that the downstream replication or workflow sees the same effective-dated relationship. Do not diagnose a missing relationship from today's view if the relationship is valid only for another date or plan version.
ECC vs S/4HANA
SAP's current ABAP Platform 2025 documentation lists PP01 as Maintain Plan Data, and current Employee Central-to-S/4HANA organizational-data documentation uses PP01 for S/4HANA setup examples. In cloud-led HR architectures, Employee Central can be the system of record, so direct PP01 maintenance must follow the defined replication/ownership model.
Common pitfalls and how to diagnose them
- Maintaining the wrong plan version and then not seeing the object in the productive organizational structure.
- Creating overlapping effective-dated relationships.
- Using PP01 for objects/processes that SAP documentation says should be maintained by a specialized application transaction.
- Changing replicated organizational data locally when Employee Central is the authoritative source.
Whose problem this is
Primary ownership is HCM Organizational Management. Workflow teams may consume the same organization structure, while SuccessFactors/integration teams own synchronization when Employee Central is the system of record. Security becomes relevant for structural authorizations and maintenance access.
