QS41 — Edit QM Catalog
QS41 is a Quality Management catalog maintenance transaction used to edit catalog content such as code groups and codes for the selected catalog type. SAP's current documentation references QS41 for editing catalogs, while QS51 is used to edit selected sets. It should not be described as the transaction that creates a selected set.
This page covers QS41, the transaction for building QM selected sets from existing catalog codes and code groups. It focuses on why a selected set silently fails to appear where it is expected, and how to trace that back through the catalog profile and code group status.

Purpose
QS41 maintains QM catalogs—the structured code system used for qualitative characteristic values, defects, tasks, activities, usage decisions, and other coded quality information depending on catalog type. Catalogs contain code groups and codes; selected sets are a separate object that restricts which catalog codes are offered in a particular process.
When it is used
Use QS41 when QM needs to create or maintain catalog code groups/codes for a catalog type. Typical changes include adding a new standardized defect code, usage-decision code, or qualitative valuation code. If the codes already exist and the requirement is only to restrict which ones users can choose, maintain the selected set in QS51 instead.
How to use it in practice
- Choose the correct catalog type before editing; catalog types have different business meanings.
- Select or create the code group required by the quality taxonomy.
- Maintain codes, descriptions, valuation or other catalog attributes supported by that catalog type.
- Observe client/transport/governance rules because catalog content can be used broadly across QM processes.
- Test the code in the actual results-recording, notification, or usage-decision context that consumes it.
Key data objects
Catalog semantics are driven by catalog type, code group, code, validity, and process assignment.
- Catalog type — determines the business meaning of the codes.
- Code group — organizes related catalog codes.
- Code — the actual selectable quality value.
- Short/long text and valuation attributes — explain and classify the code.
- Selected-set membership — maintained separately; a valid catalog code may still not appear to users if it is not included in the selected set used by the process.
How to prove it in the data
Display the catalog/code group after saving and confirm that the code exists under the intended catalog type with the correct text and attributes. Then check the selected set or catalog profile used by the business process and execute a representative QM transaction to prove that the code is offered where expected.
ECC vs S/4HANA
SAP's current S/4HANA/Service and Asset Manager documentation references QS41 for editing catalog data and QS51 for editing selected sets. The catalog and selected-set concepts remain distinct in S/4HANA.
Common pitfalls and how to diagnose them
- Creating a code in the wrong catalog type.
- Assuming that adding a catalog code automatically makes it appear in a process that uses a selected set.
- Changing a code's meaning after it has been used historically, weakening reporting consistency.
- Confusing QS41 catalog editing with QS51 selected-set editing.
Whose problem this is
QM functional/master-data owners govern catalog taxonomy and semantics. Business quality owners define the meaning of codes; QM consultants implement and test their use in inspection, notification, and usage-decision processes.
