Update tasks, background jobs and dumps — Guided debugger and evidence walkthrough
Full lesson currently free to read · AI practice limits apply separately
Follow six evidence-led steps to investigate update tasks, background jobs and dumps. Correlate update, job and dump evidence without rerunning productive jobs blindly.

Explanation
Training simulation: All sample identifiers, logs, requests, transactions, values and cases are fictional. Tools and permissions vary by SAP release; perform any changes only in approved DEV/QA environments.
Update tasks, background jobs and dumps — Guided debugger and evidence walkthrough
Outcome: Correlate update, job and dump evidence without rerunning productive jobs blindly.
Before you begin: ECC/S/4HANA on-premise or private cloud: SM37, SM13, ST22; JDBG/SM50 use may be restricted. Use only fictional test keys and an authorized development/test tenant.
Reproduce with the sample evidence
Job Z_DEMO_BILLING_NIGHT | user BATCH_DEMO | 02:15SM37: Canceled in step 2, program Z_DEMO_POSTST22: CONVT_NO_NUMBER | 02:16 | BATCH_DEMOInput line 47: AMOUNT='12A.50'SM13: no failed update record for this run Six-stage diagnosis
- Identify actual job name, scheduling user, date/time, step program, variant and system/client in SM37.
- Read job log and spool; record which records were processed and whether step 2 was started.
- Correlate a dump in ST22 by user, program, timestamp and stack; exclude unrelated dumps.
- Inspect the failing input with a protected sample, type conversion rules and error handling; check SM13 only if an update failed.
- Reproduce variant and exact malformed input in QA without posting duplicates; set a scoped breakpoint at conversion.
- Implement input validation and meaningful application log entries; rerun only an approved sample and reconcile output documents.
What should be observed
- Job cancellation occurs exactly when the conversion dump occurs in the same program.
- Input AMOUNT contains an alphabetic character and cannot be converted to the expected numeric field.
- No SM13 failure suggests this particular failure is before an update was scheduled, not an update posting defect.
Alternative hypotheses to rule out
- Malformed external numeric input causes the ABAP conversion exception.
- A background user lacks authorization to read or post a document.
- A delayed update task fails after the job finishes its dialog phase.
Verify, not just fix
- Positive test: A valid numeric amount completes and produces one approved posting.
- Negative test: Malformed input is rejected with a traceable row error and does not dump the entire scheduled run.
- Cross-process regression: Restart after a mid-batch failure does not duplicate already-committed business documents.
Test your diagnosis
Question: SM37 job is 'Canceled' with a matching conversion dump and invalid amount. What should you fix?
A. The number format and input validation in the job's affected program.
B. Force job status to Finished.
C. Restart entire productive batch without checking posted rows.
Correct: A. Fix and test the failing input contract; status manipulation does not resolve data conversion.
Production-safe approach: Never use JDBG or reprocess SM13 records in production without system-owner permission; document duplication exposure and rollback.
Real project scenario
Synthetic support case: A foreground transaction succeeds but update processing or a scheduled job fails.
The sample processing line contains '12A.50' and the batch program converts it without validation. The matched ST22 stack identifies the failed conversion in step 2.
Common mistakes
- A job with status Finished can still have skipped records or logged application errors.
- A dump for a background user isn't proof it belongs to the exact job step without timestamp and program match.
- Rerunning a job or failed update without idempotency checks can create duplicate postings.
Best practices
Validate/normalize input according to the approved interface contract, log rejected rows, and process valid rows once with explicit business review. Do not replay previously committed rows.
- Positive test: A valid numeric amount completes and produces one approved posting.
- Negative test: Malformed input is rejected with a traceable row error and does not dump the entire scheduled run.
- Cross-process regression: Restart after a mid-batch failure does not duplicate already-committed business documents.
Never use JDBG or reprocess SM13 records in production without system-owner permission; document duplication exposure and rollback.
Interview angle
Background processing questions: analysing failed jobs in SM37 with job logs and spool, matching dumps in ST22, update errors in SM13, and understanding synchronous vs asynchronous updates and COMMIT WORK.

Quick check
0 of 4 questions attempted
1. SM37 job is 'Canceled' with a matching conversion dump and invalid amount. What should you fix?
2. Where do you look for failed update requests after a document 'saved' but data is missing?
3. A background job was cancelled. What should you check first?
4. Why can a document appear saved to the user but later be missing?
Interview questions
1. How do you troubleshoot a failed background job?
Answer it in your own words first, then compare.
2. Explain update tasks and how you debug update errors.
Answer it in your own words first, then compare.
