MIRO, MRRL, a BAPI, or EDI posting fails with "Maximum number of 999 line items allowed".

Likely root causes

  1. The accounting document generated from the business transaction exceeds the line-item limit.
  2. Tax, freight, account assignment, or split logic creates many more FI lines than the visible business items.
  3. An interface sends excessive detail instead of using an approved summarization design.

What to inspect

  1. Simulate or inspect the generated accounting document and count FI line items.
  2. Check tax, account assignment, and split behavior that multiplies line items.
  3. For interfaces, compare the source payload with the accounting lines created by SAP.

Resolution path

  1. Identify which business logic is creating the additional FI lines.
  2. Use an SAP-supported summarization/design approach where appropriate for the process.
  3. Reduce unnecessary line-level splitting in the source or configuration when functionally valid.
  4. Regression-test totals, taxes, account assignments, and reconciliation before production use.
