VA01/VA02 cannot process a sales-order item because SAP cannot determine an item category for the material/document combination.

Likely root causes

  1. No item-category determination entry exists for the sales document type, item-category group, usage and higher-level item.
  2. Material master carries an unexpected item-category group.
  3. The wrong sales document type or material is being used.

What to inspect

  1. Sales document type and material item-category group.
  2. Item-category determination customizing for the full key.
  3. Higher-level item/usage when the item is part of a BOM or special process.

Resolution path

  1. Confirm the material and order type are correct.
  2. Maintain/correct item-category determination only for the intended business combination.
  3. Correct the material item-category group if master data is wrong.
  4. Retest pricing, schedule lines and billing relevance after determination succeeds.
