Likely root causes

  1. ABAP runtime error or unhandled exception occurred in a job step.
  2. Authorization, variant, file/RFC or application data differs in background user context.
  3. System/resource failure terminated the work process or dependent service.

What to inspect

  1. SM37 job log and step details first.
  2. ST22 for the same timestamp/user.
  3. SM21 and system logs for infrastructure failures.
  4. Job user authorization, variant and spool/file/RFC dependencies.

Resolution path

  1. Fix the first concrete error in the job log/dump rather than rescheduling blindly.
  2. Correct background-user authorization or environment-specific dependencies.
  3. Re-run with the same variant after the root cause is fixed.
  4. Verify no partial business processing occurred before restart.
