M3 305 — M3 305 — Material Does Not Exist or Is Not Activated
SAP message M3 305 means the material number being processed is not available as an active material master in the required context. The material may not exist, may still be in a creation or activation process, or the caller may be using an incorrect material number. Verify the material master and exact identifier before changing purchasing or transaction configuration.

What it means
M3 305 states that the material does not exist or is not activated. SAP message documentation explains that the system tried to display or process a material but could not find an active material master for the supplied number. The error can appear in purchasing document creation and other transactions that depend on material master data. It is fundamentally a master-data existence or activation problem, although interfaces and formatting errors often make an existing material appear nonexistent.
Root causes
The material number may genuinely never have been created. Creation may have been scheduled or staged but not fully activated. Users or interfaces can send the wrong material number, especially with leading zeros, external numbering or migrated identifiers. A material may exist in another system or client but not in the current one. Data migration can load dependent documents before materials are available. Custom programs may strip leading zeros or use an obsolete legacy identifier. In purchasing, copied documents can retain a material that was never migrated to the target environment.
What to inspect
Search the material in MM03 using the exact number and check whether it is available in the current client. Compare internal and external material-number formatting and leading zeros. If the material was recently created, verify that creation completed successfully and that required organizational views exist for the business process. In interfaces, inspect the raw inbound value before conversion. In migration, confirm object sequencing and whether the material load completed before purchase orders or other dependent objects. If only one environment fails, compare material master presence between systems.
Resolution path
Create or activate the material through the normal master-data process if it should exist. If the number is wrong, correct the source document or interface mapping and retry. If the material exists but lacks views required by the transaction, extend it appropriately rather than creating a duplicate. For migration, correct sequencing so material masters are available before dependent transactional data. Where legacy-to-SAP mapping is involved, maintain a controlled mapping table and validate incoming identifiers before document creation.
The fix people try first (and why it fails)
Creating a new material immediately because a transaction cannot find one can produce duplicates if the real issue is number formatting or environment mismatch. Another poor workaround is replacing the material with a similar existing one just to create the document. That corrupts procurement and inventory history. First establish whether the intended material exists under another internal number, lacks required views, or was never created at all.
Whose problem this is
Material master and data governance own material existence and activation. MM Purchasing or the calling functional team owns the transaction that exposed the error. Integration and migration teams own number conversion and sequencing. ABAP teams may be involved if custom code mishandles material formatting. In governed S/4HANA landscapes, follow the master-data workflow rather than bypassing approval to fix a transaction urgently.
Common pitfalls
Do not ignore leading zeros and material-number length. Do not confuse 'material exists' with 'material has every organizational view needed by the process.' Check the current client and system. In migration, downstream failures often cascade from an earlier failed material load. Avoid creating duplicates with slightly different external identifiers. After resolving the master-data issue, retest the original transaction and any interface mapping that produced the material number.
