ANLZ table — Time-Dependent Asset Assignments

ANLZ stores time-dependent organizational assignments for fixed assets, allowing attributes such as cost center, plant, location, and responsibility to change over time without rewriting the asset's entire history. The correct row is the validity slice covering the business date being analyzed, so current assignments should not be used automatically to explain historical postings.

A consultant-focused reference for ANLZ covering its purpose, key fields, joins, safe query restrictions, proof steps, release context, ownership and recurring interpretation traps.

What it stores

ANLZ stores date-effective organizational assignments for assets, including cost center, plant, location and responsibility. Each row must be interpreted using the complete technical key and the application process that writes it. A consultant should first establish whether the row represents current state, a dated master-data slice, a document item, a history event, an index entry or a compatibility representation. Organizational levels, validity dates, fiscal years, ledgers, languages, statuses and sequence numbers are part of the grain whenever those dimensions exist. The table should be read as evidence of application behavior, not as an isolated spreadsheet. Confirm the owning business object and configuration before deciding that a value is wrong.

Key fields

Asset identity and the period of validity determine time-dependent organizational assignments. Fields such as cost center, plant or business area need to be read at the date relevant to the accounting transaction.

  • BUKRS — company code.
  • ANLN1/ANLN2 — asset and subnumber.
  • Validity start/end dates — determine the effective assignment.
  • KOSTL — cost center where used.
  • WERKS/STORT and related organizational fields — plant/location context.
  • ANLA — provides the asset master context.

How it joins the data model

Connect ANLZ to the asset master with complete company-code/asset identifiers and apply the appropriate validity period. Multiple assignments over time are not duplicates; ignoring the date is what creates false joins.

  • asset key to ANLA
  • KOSTL to CSKS with controlling area and validity date
  • WERKS to T001W
  • PERNR to HCM master data when integration is active

How to read it safely

If depreciation hits the wrong cost center, inspect the asset's assignment history and the effective date before blaming the accounting document. Compare the allocation active at posting time with the current assignment shown in maintenance.

How to prove it in the data

Take one reproducible example from the relevant SAP screen, report or application log. Record its full displayed key, organizational context, key date, language and status. Locate the matching ANLZ row using those values, then follow the documented parent and child joins without dropping key components. Compare the result using the same key date and ledger. When values differ, test for leading-zero conversion, multiple validity slices, inactive history, parallel ledgers, fiscal-year boundaries, archived data and asynchronous replication. Save the read-only evidence before escalating. If the row is wrong, reproduce the maintenance path in a non-production system and route the fix to the application owner rather than changing the table.

ECC vs S/4HANA

ANLZ remains important in S/4HANA Asset Accounting because asset organizational assignments are still effective-dated. Historical analysis must select the ANLZ validity slice applicable to the posting date and then reconcile with current Asset Accounting and Universal Journal reporting.

Common pitfalls

  • Selecting by one convenient identifier and silently mixing organizational units, years, ledgers, languages or validity periods.
  • Joining on a partial key or descriptive value and creating duplicates that appear to be legitimate business rows.
  • Ignoring inactive, deletion, reversal or status indicators and reporting retained history as current state.
  • Assuming this table is authoritative without checking S/4HANA simplification, Business Partner synchronization, Universal Journal, MATDOC, CDS views or an external cloud source.
  • Treating a missing row as proof that an event never occurred even though logging, replication, authorization and archiving scope can differ.
  • Updating table rows directly instead of correcting data through the supported transaction, app, API or migration process.

Whose problem this is

FI-AA and asset master-data owners control time-dependent assignments, with controlling validating cost-center ownership. ABAP report developers must honor validity dates when constructing historical reconciliation reports.
