CKMLCP — Costing Cockpit: Actual Costing Run

CKMLCP is the Material Ledger costing cockpit used to run periodic actual costing. A costing run covers selected plants and a period and executes selection, sequence determination, single-level and multi-level price determination and post closing, so inventory and cost of goods sold are valued at actual cost rather than standard.

What CKMLCP is for

With actual costing active, price and quantity differences collect on each material during the period. The costing cockpit turns them into an actual periodic unit price and passes differences from consumed materials to the materials and orders that consumed them. Post closing then revalues inventory and moves the differences on consumption to cost of goods sold or other receivers. It is the step that makes the Material Ledger produce actual costs.

When it is used

It runs after the logistics and invoice cut-off at month end, once production orders are settled or technically complete as the design requires. Controlling usually owns the run, and repeated runs within the same period are common while issues are fixed. It is also a major test object in S/4HANA conversions where actual costing is introduced.

How it is used in practice

Create a costing run with its plants and period, including every plant that exchanges materials with the others, then execute the steps in order: selection, determine sequence, single-level price determination, multi-level price determination, revaluation of consumption if used, and post closing. Each step has a log; materials with errors must be analysed before continuing. Post closing can be reversed when a rerun is needed.

Fields and objects that matter

  • Costing run name, plants and period
  • Step status and logs for selection, sequence and price determination
  • Not-distributed and not-allocated differences shown after the run
  • Post closing documents and their reversal option

How to prove it in the data

For a sample finished product, open CKM3N for the period and confirm that the periodic unit price after the run equals the standard price plus its share of differences. Check that the not-distributed and not-allocated differences shown in the cockpit are small and explained. After post closing, the closing documents should show inventory revaluation and the differences moved to cost of goods sold or other receivers.

ECC vs S/4HANA

In S/4HANA the Material Ledger is mandatory for inventory valuation, but actual costing remains optional. Newer releases also offer Fiori apps to run and monitor actual costing.

Common pitfalls and how they show up

Most problems start before the run, in incomplete period data.

  • Invoices posted after the run, which move differences into the next period
  • Production orders not settled, leaving differences unallocated
  • Cyclic material relationships not understood, causing unexpected price changes
  • Closing the period without reviewing materials with errors or unusual price swings
  • Running the cockpit for one plant when materials move between plants, which leaves differences unpassed

Whose problem this is

Controlling owns the costing run, the review of errors and the sign-off before the Material Ledger period is closed. Logistics, purchasing and production planning own the completeness of period postings, because most run errors trace back to their documents.
