FAGL_FCV — Foreign Currency Valuation
FAGL_FCV is the foreign currency valuation run in SAP's new general ledger and S/4HANA. At period end it revalues foreign currency open items and GL balances at the key-date exchange rate, posts unrealised exchange gains or losses through valuation account determination, and can reverse them in the next period depending on the valuation method.

What FAGL_FCV is for
Receivables, payables, bank balances and some GL accounts are recorded in a document currency but reported in company code currency. When exchange rates move, the reported values drift from reality. Foreign currency valuation recalculates them at the key-date rate and posts the difference as an unrealised gain or loss, so the balance sheet reflects current rates. In S/4HANA it can also handle several currencies and ledgers in one run.
When it is used
It runs at every month end and year end after exchange rates for the key date are maintained. Groups with several accounting principles may run it per ledger or valuation area, for example local GAAP and IFRS. It is also run in simulation during close preparation to estimate the impact of rate movements.
How it is used in practice
Choose the company code, key date and valuation area, and select open items, GL balances or both. The valuation method defines the rate type, whether the run reverses in the next period and how write-ups are treated. Check that the exchange rates in TCURR exist for the key date, run a simulation, review the log by account and currency, then run in update mode.
Fields and objects that matter
- Valuation key date and valuation area, which tie the run to a ledger and method
- Valuation method with exchange rate type and reversal behaviour
- Selections for open items, GL balances, vendors and customers
- Accounts for unrealised gains and losses from the valuation account determination
How to prove it in the data
For one vendor or customer item, recalculate the valuation by hand: document currency amount times the key-date rate from TCURR, minus the amount already recorded in local currency. The difference should match the valuation line in the run log and the posting in ACDOCA for the valuation area. For GL balances, compare the balance in FAGLB03 before and after the run per currency.
ECC vs S/4HANA
In S/4HANA FAGL_FCV is the standard tool and replaces older transactions such as F.05 for most scenarios. Postings land in the Universal Journal (ACDOCA) with ledger-specific results.
Common pitfalls and how they show up
Valuation results are only as good as the rates and the account settings behind them.
- Missing key-date exchange rates, which causes errors or valuation at a wrong rate
- Wrong valuation method for a ledger, leading to different results than the accounting policy
- Accounts not marked for open item management or valuation, so balances are skipped
- Running twice without reversal logic, which doubles the unrealised result
Whose problem this is
General ledger and close teams own the run and valuation methods. Treasury maintains exchange rates for the key date, and controlling or group reporting checks the impact on results before the period is closed.
