SAP ALV: REUSE_ALV, CL_GUI_ALV_GRID and SALV Compared

SAP ALV has several generations: REUSE_ALV_* function modules are classic list/grid wrappers, CL_GUI_ALV_GRID is the editable Control Framework grid with rich event handling, and CL_SALV_TABLE provides a simpler object-oriented display model with much less editable-grid control. Choose from required interaction and maintenance context; for new Fiori applications, ALV is generally a SAP GUI reporting technology rather than the UI target.

Practitioner technical guide to SAP ALV: REUSE_ALV, CL_GUI_ALV_GRID and SALV Compared, with architecture context, a worked example, decision rules, production pitfalls, S/4HANA implications, ownership, and the standard SAP objects used to prove behavior.

What it is

ALV standardizes tabular SAP GUI output: column headings, sorting, filtering, totals, variants, layout persistence and events. The REUSE_ALV function-module family predates OO ALV and remains common in older reports. CL_GUI_ALV_GRID embeds a grid control in a custom container/screen and exposes detailed events, field catalog settings, cell styles and edit behavior. SALV classes wrap standard display scenarios with a smaller OO API and automatic metadata derivation. SALV is excellent for quick read-only reports but is not a direct one-for-one replacement for every editable grid requirement.

When to use it

Use SALV for straightforward read-only SAP GUI reports where standard functions and quick implementation matter. Use CL_GUI_ALV_GRID when a classic dynpro application genuinely needs editable cells, custom event processing, multiple grids or detailed frontend control. Maintain REUSE_ALV code where it is stable, but avoid starting a new long-lived design on obsolete function-module patterns without a reason. For web/Fiori experiences, expose data through CDS/OData and use the target UI framework rather than trying to transport ALV to the browser.

How it fits the stack

ALV sits in the presentation layer above ABAP internal tables and below SAP GUI. Field catalogs describe column metadata; DDIC structures can supply labels/types automatically. Variants persist user layouts. Events such as user command, hotspot/double-click, data changed and toolbar functions let classic applications respond to interaction. Spool/print behavior differs between list and grid contexts. ALV does not define business authorization or data retrieval; those remain in the application/query layer.

A worked example

A reconciliation report needs sorting, filtering, totals and download but no editing. SALV can display the result with little custom metadata. A planning workbench needs editable quantity cells, dropdowns, validation on DATA_CHANGED and a custom toolbar button; CL_GUI_ALV_GRID is the appropriate classic control. Rewriting that requirement with REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY simply because the team knows the function is a step backward. A new cloud/Fiori app would instead model the data and actions for a web table.

How to choose

  • Read-only classic report with standard functions: SALV is usually the simplest OO choice.
  • Editable grid or rich Control Framework events: CL_GUI_ALV_GRID.
  • Existing stable REUSE_ALV report: maintain pragmatically unless modernization has business value.
  • Need browser/mobile UX: use Fiori/UI framework, not ALV.
  • Keep data selection/business logic separate from ALV event/presentation code.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming SALV supports the same editable-grid scenarios as CL_GUI_ALV_GRID.
  • Embedding database SELECT logic directly into ALV event handlers and creating hard-to-test UI code.
  • Building manual field catalogs when DDIC metadata could supply stable labels/types, then letting field definitions drift.
  • Using frontend download methods in background processing.
  • Treating ALV layout variants as application/business configuration rather than user presentation preferences.

ECC, S/4HANA and clean core

ALV remains heavily used in S/4HANA SAP GUI transactions and custom reports. It is not the strategic UI model for S/4HANA Cloud/Fiori, and ABAP Cloud development does not target classic GUI controls as its primary consumption model. Existing ALV reports can coexist with clean-core modernization, but new analytical apps should consider CDS/Fiori Elements or embedded analytics.

Whose problem this is

ABAP developers own ALV selection, field metadata, event handling and separation from business logic. Functional users define required columns, totals and interactions. UX/architecture teams should decide whether a new requirement belongs in SAP GUI or Fiori before the developer chooses an ALV class.
