SAP Spool, Output Requests and TemSe

SAP spool separates generation of printable output from physical device delivery. A spool request stores formatted output/metadata; one or more output requests represent attempts to send it to a printer or output device. TemSe provides temporary sequential storage used by spool and other runtime objects. SP01 is the main monitor. A successfully created spool request does not prove the printer produced paper.

What it is

Classic ABAP lists, SAPscript, Smart Forms and some form/output processes create spool data managed by the spool system. The spool request identifies owner, device/form parameters, pages and content type. Output requests handle actual host/printer delivery. TemSe stores temporary sequential objects used for spool data and other SAP runtime facilities; TemSe consistency/storage issues can therefore surface as spool errors. Device types, access methods, host spoolers and print servers determine how SAP output becomes an operating-system/printer job.

When to use it

Use spool monitoring when an application says 'printed' but no physical/electronic output arrived, when a job generated report output, or when PDF conversion operates on spool/OTF. First prove whether a spool request exists. If none exists, investigate application/form/output determination. If it exists but output request failed, analyze device/access method/host spool. For large queues/storage issues, Basis investigates TemSe/spool administration rather than application code.

How it fits the stack

SP01 monitors requests; SPAD configures output devices/device types; background jobs can create spool; SAPscript/Smart Forms can generate OTF that goes through spool/conversion; Adobe forms may produce PDF/spool via ADS. SCOT/SOST is separate outbound communication for email. TemSe also supports job logs and other transient storage, so TemSe errors can affect more than printers.

A worked example

A Smart Form call returns no application error and SP01 shows a spool request, but status is Problem and no printer output appears. The form/layout is not the first suspect: the output request log shows host spooler connection failure. Basis fixes the print server. In another incident no spool request is created at all because output determination never selected the form; the problem stays with application configuration.

How to choose

  • No spool request: investigate application/output generation first.
  • Spool exists, output failed: inspect device/access method/host spool.
  • Need PDF: identify whether source is ABAP list, OTF or Adobe PDF before choosing conversion path.
  • Set retention/cleanup to prevent spool/TemSe growth.
  • Separate print configuration from email/output-channel configuration.

Common pitfalls

  • Blaming the form layout for a failed printer connection.
  • Deleting spool requests before capturing error logs.
  • Treating spool creation as physical print confirmation.
  • Using the wrong converter for ABAP list versus OTF content.
  • Ignoring TemSe/storage health until many background/spool functions fail together.

ECC, S/4HANA and clean core

Spool remains relevant in S/4HANA on-premise/private cloud for SAP GUI/classic outputs, while newer Output Management/cloud print services can change the delivery architecture. Understanding spool/TemSe is still necessary for retained forms/jobs and many backend print/PDF scenarios.

Whose problem this is

Basis owns SPAD/spool/TemSe/print infrastructure; application/form teams own output generation/content; operations manage queues/retention; desktop/network print teams own external printer/host spool components.
