DATA, TYPES, CONSTANTS and VALUE Operator
Learn how to declare variables, structures, constants and initial values safely.
Explanation
ABAP programs depend heavily on correct data declarations. DATA is used to declare variables, TYPES defines reusable local data types, and CONSTANTS stores fixed values. Modern ABAP also uses inline declarations and the VALUE operator to make code concise. The key is not just syntax but correctness. In SAP projects, fields like material number, customer number, company code and document number should normally use SAP data elements or compatible types. Wrong type choices can create conversion, leading-zero or formatting issues. Constants should be used instead of hardcoded values so the code is easier to maintain.
Code example
TYPES: BEGIN OF ty_output, matnr TYPE matnr, maktx TYPE maktx, status TYPE char1, END OF ty_output. CONSTANTS c_success TYPE char1 VALUE 'S'. DATA(ls_output) = VALUE ty_output( matnr = '000000000000123456' maktx = 'Demo Material' status = c_success ).Real project scenario
A developer uses STRING for material number and passes it to a BAPI. The value does not match MARA because leading-zero conversion is missing. Using MATNR type and conversion-aware logic avoids the issue.
Common mistakes
- Using generic CHAR fields for SAP business keys. - Hardcoding values repeatedly. - Declaring variables globally without need. - Using STRING where fixed SAP type is better.
Best practices
- Use SAP data elements where possible. - Use CONSTANTS for fixed values. - Use TYPES for reusable structures. - Use inline declarations where readability improves.
Interview angle
A good answer should mention data correctness, SAP data elements, constants and maintainability.
