Understand the Material Ledger in S/4HANA: inventory valued in multiple currencies and valuations, how price differences are collected per material and period, and how this differs from classic standard-price inventory accounting.

Explanation
📌 KEY POINTS
✅ In S/4HANA the Material Ledger is active for inventory valuation, supporting several currencies per material.
✅ With standard price, purchase and production price differences are recorded per material and period.
✅ Additional valuations such as group or profit center valuation can be carried in parallel where configured.
✅ Actual costing is optional and uses these collected differences to calculate actual prices at period end.
⚠️ Activating actual costing without understanding price difference flows makes period-end results surprising.

▶ WHERE WE ARE
This series covers the Material Ledger. Part 1 explains what it is; Part 2 runs actual costing; Part 3 troubleshoots it.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 1. INVENTORY VALUATION BASICS
Materials are valued with standard price (S) or moving average price (V). With standard price, inventory stays at standard and differences between actual and standard — from invoices or production — go to price difference accounts. With moving average, the price changes with each receipt. Both are valid; the choice depends on the business.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 2. WHAT THE MATERIAL LEDGER ADDS
The Material Ledger records inventory values per material in several currencies, for example company code currency, group currency and a hard currency, using historical rates instead of translating at current rates. In S/4HANA it is the basis of inventory valuation and runs for all valuated materials.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 3. PRICE DIFFERENCES BY MATERIAL
With standard price, the Material Ledger keeps price differences per material and period rather than only as a total on a GL account. This makes it possible to analyse which materials caused variances and, with actual costing, to revalue them.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 4. PARALLEL VALUATIONS
Groups can carry legal, group and profit center valuations of inventory in parallel, so internal profits on transfers between plants or companies can be eliminated for group views. This requires careful configuration of transfer prices and currency types.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 5. ACTUAL COSTING AS AN OPTION
Actual costing uses the collected differences at period end to calculate a periodic unit price per material, rolling differences up through multi-level production. It is activated per plant and is valuable where actual costs fluctuate strongly or legal requirements demand actual valuation.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ STEP BY STEP
- Display the Material Ledger data for one standard-price material.
- Post a goods receipt and invoice at a different price and observe price differences.
- Compare values in company code and group currency.
- Decide with controlling whether actual costing is needed for a plant.
✅ CHECKPOINT: you can explain where a price difference was recorded and in which currencies.

What this specific lesson teaches
Understand the Material Ledger in S/4HANA: inventory valued in multiple currencies and valuations, how price differences are collected per material and period, and how this differs from classic standard-price inventory accounting.
Key lesson principle: In S/4HANA the Material Ledger is active for inventory valuation, supporting several currencies per material.
Representative SAP learning flow, not a guarantee of system runtime sequence in every scenario. The chapter-specific facts come from the published lesson text.
Real project scenario
A manufacturer's purchase price variances were reported only as a GL total, and controllers could not tell which raw materials caused them. Using Material Ledger analysis per material, they found two suppliers whose price increases had not been reflected in standard costs, and updated the costing run.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Material Ledger with actual costing.
- Ignoring price differences per material.
- Parallel valuations without transfer price design.
- Activating actual costing without controlling ownership.
Best practices
- Analyse variances per material, not only totals.
- Design currency and valuation types upfront.
- Pilot actual costing in one plant.
- Align standard cost updates with variance analysis.
Interview angle
Interviewers ask what the Material Ledger is in S/4HANA, how it handles multiple currencies and what actual costing adds.
