FICO Material Ledger Part 3: Troubleshooting Price Differences and Run Errors
Full lesson currently free to read · AI practice limits apply separately
Diagnose common Material Ledger problems: materials that cannot be processed, not-distributed differences, distorted periodic prices from low quantities or missing invoices, and reconciling the Material Ledger with the GL.

Explanation
📌 KEY POINTS
✅ Not-distributed differences remain when differences cannot be allocated because inventory or consumption is too small.
✅ Low ending stock with large differences produces extreme periodic prices — check before posting.
✅ Missing or late invoices and GR/IR imbalances distort actual prices.
✅ Material Ledger values must reconcile with inventory and price difference GL accounts.
⚠️ Fixing a distorted price manually without fixing the source posting repeats the problem next period.

▶ WHERE WE ARE
This final part handles the issues controllers bring to FICO consultants every month end.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 1. TYPICAL ERRORS
The cockpit lists materials with errors such as missing prices, missing currency data, inconsistent quantities or cyclic production that cannot converge. Each message points to master data or postings. Fix them before multi-level determination, because errors at component level propagate.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 2. NOT-DISTRIBUTED AND NOT-ALLOCATED DIFFERENCES
If a material had large differences but little stock and little consumption, the system cannot distribute them proportionally, and part remains not-distributed. Settings decide how such amounts are treated at closing. Large values indicate a source problem, for example invoices posted for goods received in an earlier period.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 3. DISTORTED PRICES
A periodic price far above or below standard usually comes from a tiny quantity carrying a large difference, a wrong invoice quantity or price, or a goods receipt valued incorrectly. Compare receipts, invoices and quantities for the material in the period. Thresholds that flag unusual price changes help catch these before post closing.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 4. RECONCILIATION
Inventory value in the Material Ledger should match inventory GL accounts, and price differences should match price difference accounts after closing. Differences usually come from manual GL postings to inventory accounts or from postings outside the material movement process. Restrict direct postings to these accounts.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 5. ROOT-CAUSE FIXES
Most Material Ledger issues start in logistics: wrong unit of measure conversions, unrealistic standard costs, late invoices or unplanned scrap. Fixing them at source — master data, standard cost update, invoice cut-off — makes each period's run smoother than any manual correction.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ STEP BY STEP
- Open the error list of a costing run and group by message.
- Find a material with an extreme periodic price and trace its receipts and invoices.
- Check not-distributed differences and their source.
- Reconcile inventory GL accounts with Material Ledger values.
✅ CHECKPOINT: every extreme price and not-distributed amount has an identified source and fix.

What this specific lesson teaches
Diagnose common Material Ledger problems: materials that cannot be processed, not-distributed differences, distorted periodic prices from low quantities or missing invoices, and reconciling the Material Ledger with the GL.
Key lesson principle: Not-distributed differences remain when differences cannot be allocated because inventory or consumption is too small.
Representative SAP learning flow, not a guarantee of system runtime sequence in every scenario. The chapter-specific facts come from the published lesson text.
Real project scenario
Every quarter a chemical intermediate showed a periodic price five times its standard. The material's unit of measure conversion for one supplier was wrong, so invoices posted quantities in kilograms against receipts in tonnes. Fixing the conversion and correcting invoices removed the distortion permanently.
Common mistakes
- Manual price corrections without root cause.
- Ignoring not-distributed differences.
- Direct GL postings to inventory accounts.
- Running multi-level with component errors open.
Best practices
- Thresholds for unusual price changes.
- Trace anomalies to receipts and invoices.
- Block direct postings to inventory accounts.
- Fix master data and cut-off issues at source.
Interview angle
Interviewers ask how you investigate extreme actual prices or not-distributed differences and how you reconcile the Material Ledger with the GL.

3. Inventory GL accounts don't match Material Ledger values. What is a common cause?
