Explanation
📌 KEY POINTS
✅ Treasury and Risk Management captures deals like deposits, loans, FX spots/forwards and swaps as financial transactions.
✅ Processing follows front office (trading), back office (settlement, confirmation) and accounting with segregation of duties.
✅ Each product type has flows, conditions and an update type that determines how it posts to the GL.
✅ Period-end processes calculate accruals, valuations (e.g. FX and fair value) and reclassifications.
⚠️ Allowing traders to settle or post their own deals breaks the core treasury control.

▶ WHERE WE ARE
Parts 1–4 covered cash. Part 5 covers the financial instruments treasury uses to invest, borrow and hedge.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 1. FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS
In Treasury and Risk Management (TRM), each deal is a financial transaction with a product type and transaction type, counterparty, amounts, dates and conditions such as interest rate. Typical products are fixed-term deposits, commercial paper, loans, FX spot and forward contracts, and interest rate swaps. The transaction manager, for example via FTR_CREATE, captures and maintains them.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 2. FRONT, BACK AND ACCOUNTING
The trader enters the deal (front office). The back office confirms it with the counterparty, often through matched confirmations, and releases it for settlement and payment. Accounting posts the flows and period-end entries. Status management and authorizations enforce that these roles are separate, which is the central control in any treasury.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 3. FLOWS AND UPDATE TYPES
A deal generates flows such as principal increase, interest and repayment. Each flow has an update type that maps through account determination to GL accounts, so the posting logic is configurable per product. Payment flows can generate payment requests that go through the same payment factory and approvals as other payments.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 4. VALUATION AND ACCRUALS
At period end, TRM calculates interest accruals, foreign currency valuation and, for derivatives, fair value changes based on market data like FX rates and yield curves. Results post to the GL according to valuation area settings, which can differ by accounting standard, such as local GAAP and IFRS. Market data must be loaded reliably, typically from a data provider.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 5. HEDGING AND RISK
FX forwards and swaps are often used to hedge exposures from operations. Hedge management and hedge accounting link hedging instruments to hedged items and track effectiveness, while market risk analysis evaluates positions under scenarios. These advanced areas build on correctly captured transactions and market data.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ STEP BY STEP
- Create a test fixed-term deposit and display its flows.
- Settle it in back office and check the status change.
- Post the flows and trace one update type to GL accounts.
- Run interest accrual at month end and review the postings.
✅ CHECKPOINT: a deal moves from trade to settlement to posting and accrual with separate roles.

What this specific lesson teaches
See how financial transactions such as money market deposits, loans and FX forwards are captured in SAP Treasury and Risk Management, how they move through trading, back office and accounting, and how valuation and accruals reach the GL.
Key lesson principle: Treasury and Risk Management captures deals like deposits, loans, FX spots/forwards and swaps as financial transactions.
Representative SAP learning flow, not a guarantee of system runtime sequence in every scenario. The chapter-specific facts come from the published lesson text.
Real project scenario
Month-end FX valuation of forward contracts produced huge gains because the market data load had failed and rates from three months earlier were used. Valuation was reversed, the market data interface monitored, and valuation now checks rate dates before running.
Common mistakes
- Traders with settlement or posting authorization.
- Valuation run with stale market data.
- Update types mapped to wrong accounts.
- Treasury payments outside normal payment approvals.
Best practices
- Strict role separation enforced by status and authorization.
- Monitored market data feed with date checks.
- Product-by-product account determination testing.
- Treasury payments through the payment factory.
Interview angle
Interviewers expect you to explain front, back office and accounting separation, how deals post via update types, and what happens at period end in TRM.
