Explanation
📌 KEY POINTS
✅ FX exposure arises from foreign-currency receivables, payables, orders and forecast flows.
✅ Exposure management collects exposures per currency and period so treasury can decide what to hedge.
✅ FX forwards lock a rate for a future date; the hedge offsets gains or losses on the underlying exposure.
✅ Hedge accounting aligns timing of hedge results with the hedged item when strict documentation and effectiveness rules are met.
⚠️ Revaluing open items in FICO without considering hedges shows misleading P&L volatility.

▶ WHERE WE ARE
This final treasury part connects operational FICO data to treasury decisions about currency risk.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 1. WHERE EXPOSURE COMES FROM
An Indian company invoicing in USD has a receivable whose INR value changes with the rate until it is paid. Payables in EUR, sales orders in USD and forecast export revenue create similar exposures. FICO already revalues open items at period end, which makes the risk visible in P&L as unrealised gains or losses.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 2. COLLECTING EXPOSURES
Treasury needs a consolidated view: net exposure per currency pair and maturity bucket across the group. SAP exposure management can collect exposures from operational documents and from planned data submitted by subsidiaries. Netting natural offsets — USD receivables against USD payables — reduces what needs to be hedged.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 3. HEDGING WITH FORWARDS
An FX forward fixes the exchange rate for a future date. If a company expects to receive USD 1 million in three months, selling USD forward fixes the INR it will get. When the receivable is revalued at a different rate, the forward's value moves the opposite way, offsetting the effect.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 4. HEDGE ACCOUNTING BASICS
Without hedge accounting, the forward's fair value change and the underlying's change may hit P&L in different periods, especially for forecast transactions that are not yet on the balance sheet. Hedge accounting under IFRS 9 (or the applicable standard) allows matching, but requires formal designation, documentation of the risk management objective and effectiveness assessment. SAP hedge management supports designation and the related postings.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ 5. WHAT FICO CONSULTANTS MUST ALIGN
Make sure FX valuation in FICO and in treasury use the same rate types and dates, that hedge results post to accounts that reporting can relate to the hedged items, and that exposure data from AR/AP is complete. Close cooperation between FICO and treasury teams avoids double counting and confusing P&L.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
▶ STEP BY STEP
- List foreign currency open items for one company code by currency.
- Compute net exposure per currency after natural offsets.
- Model a forward hedge for one exposure and its effect at month end.
- Check that FICO and treasury use the same rate type for valuation.
✅ CHECKPOINT: you can explain how an exposure, its forward hedge and their valuation interact at month end.

What this specific lesson teaches
Understand where foreign currency exposure arises in operations, how it is collected for treasury, how forwards are used to hedge it, and the basics of hedge accounting — so FICO and treasury designs fit together.
Key lesson principle: FX exposure arises from foreign-currency receivables, payables, orders and forecast flows.

Real project scenario
An exporter's P&L swung every month with USD movements even though treasury had hedged most receivables. FICO revalued receivables with one rate type while treasury valued forwards with another, at different times of day. Aligning rate types and valuation timing reduced the apparent volatility, and hedge accounting was introduced for forecast exports.
Common mistakes
- Different rate types for FICO and treasury valuation.
- Hedging gross exposure without natural offsets.
- Assuming hedge accounting applies without documentation.
- Incomplete exposure data from operations.
Best practices
- One rate type and timing policy for valuation.
- Net exposures before hedging.
- Formal hedge documentation with effectiveness testing.
- Joint FICO-treasury design of postings and reports.
Interview angle
Interviewers ask where FX exposure comes from, how a forward hedges it, and why hedge accounting exists — keep answers practical and linked to FICO valuation.
