Explanation

Equipment Category is the single most influential configuration control point for equipment master data. Defined in customizing, each category determines the number range used for equipment created under it, the field selection group governing which fields are mandatory, optional, or hidden, and which views (such as PM data, sales data, fleet data) are relevant. A well-designed category scheme typically separates equipment by functional domain: production machinery, fleet vehicles, IT hardware, tools, or measuring instruments, because each domain often requires different mandatory fields and different responsible planning groups. Getting the category design wrong at blueprint stage is expensive to fix later because changing category after go-live is restricted and can require data migration steps. Equipment structure refers to how individual equipment records relate to each other and to Functional Locations. Equipment can be installed at a Functional Location, meaning it occupies that technical position for a period of time. Equipment can also be assigned as superior/subordinate to other equipment, building an equipment hierarchy independent of location, such as a compressor unit (superior) containing several sub-assemblies each tracked as separate equipment (subordinate). This dual structuring capability, location-based and equipment-based hierarchy, allows organizations to model both 'where is it' and 'what is it made of' simultaneously, which is essential for accurate spare parts planning and failure analysis at the right level of granularity. Time-dependent data is the mechanism that makes equipment history trustworthy. Certain fields, most notably functional location assignment, cost center, and superior equipment, are maintained with validity periods rather than being simply overwritten. When equipment is dismantled from one functional location and installed at another, the system closes the prior time slice and opens a new one, so that a history report run for a past date correctly reflects where the equipment was and who was responsible for it at that time. This is critical for maintenance cost allocation and for accident or compliance investigations that require knowing the exact configuration at a point in time. Practically, when installing equipment at a functional location, planners should check whether the target functional location's category is compatible with the equipment's intended use, and whether existing equipment needs to be dismantled first if the location can only hold one active equipment at a time (this constraint is a common configuration and business-process decision, not a hard universal rule, and should be verified against the specific implementation's design). Classification data assigned to equipment (technical characteristics) can also carry forward or need reassignment when equipment changes structural position, especially if class assignment logic is tied to functional location characteristics inherited by installed equipment in some configurations. From a support perspective, common troubleshooting scenarios include equipment that shows no history at a location because installation was done incorrectly (using a plain field change rather than the installation transaction/action), or duplicate equipment records created because search parameters didn't surface an existing serial-numbered unit before a new one was created. Regularly running structure and installation consistency checks, and enforcing serial number uniqueness where relevant, reduces this risk.
