Once the foundational objects (recipe, resource, material list) are understood, the next step for a consultant is configuring how a process order actually executes on the shop floor, and this is where Process Instruction (PI) sheets and control keys become central. A control key assigned to each phase in the master recipe determines several behaviors: whether the phase is relevant for scheduling, whether it is costed, whether it requires a confirmation, and critically, whether it generates a PI sheet. PI sheets are structured documents, often rendered through a PI sheet control recipe, that guide the plant operator through the sequence of instructions for a phase, such as 'add ingredient X, verify temperature is between Y and Z, hold for N minutes,' and they can be manually confirmed by an operator or automatically fed by process control systems in more automated plants. Process instructions themselves are attached to phases as instruction categories, some of which are plain text (operator guidance) and some of which are process instruction characteristics, which capture actual process values (temperature readings, weights, pH). These characteristics can be linked to inspection characteristics for quality management, meaning that as the operator enters a value on the PI sheet, it can simultaneously satisfy a quality inspection requirement for that phase, avoiding duplicate data entry. This integration between PP-PI and QM is one of the more distinctive features of process manufacturing compared to discrete production, where quality inspection is typically a separate, standalone lot rather than embedded into execution steps. The execution flow of a process order begins with order creation (converted from a planned order after MRP, or created directly), which copies the master recipe, material list, and resource data as of that point in time. The order then goes through release, at which point PI sheets can be generated and printed or made available electronically, and the phases become eligible for confirmation. As phases are confirmed, goods movements occur: component consumption is posted (often via backflush at the phase or operation level), and any by-products or co-products can be received into inventory. Batch management plays a heavy role here: process manufacturing usually operates in a strictly batch-managed environment, where each process order produces a specific batch of the finished material, and batch classification captures quality attributes at both component and output batch level, supporting downstream batch determination and genealogy tracing. On the costing side, phase-level activity types and standard values (e.g., process time in minutes tied to the resource's process rate) accumulate costs that flow into the process order and eventually into product cost analysis, similar to discrete orders but structured around phases rather than operations. Variance analysis for process orders therefore needs to be interpreted phase by phase, and consultants should be prepared to explain cost variances arising from yield differences in co-product apportionment, which is a factor unique to process industries. From a troubleshooting perspective, common production support issues include PI sheets not generating due to missing or incorrect control key settings, phase confirmations failing because prerequisite phases were not confirmed (if the recipe enforces sequential confirmation), and batch determination failures when the batch classification data does not match search strategy requirements. In S/4HANA, embedded analytics and Fiori apps for monitoring process orders provide better visibility into these exceptions, but the underlying configuration principles from ECC (control keys, PI sheet categories, characteristic linking to QM) remain conceptually the same; consultants should verify per release whether classic PI sheet transactions are still available or have cloud-specific restrictions, since SAP public cloud editions may simplify or limit certain classic process manufacturing transactions compared to on-premise or private cloud.

A food and beverage company using S/4HANA private cloud needed operators to record batch temperature and pH readings during a pasteurization phase, which also had to satisfy a quality inspection requirement without duplicate data entry. The consultant configured process instruction characteristics on the pasteurization phase, linked them to inspection characteristics in the material's inspection plan, and set the phase's control key to trigger both a PI sheet and an automatic inspection lot, so that a single operator entry on the PI sheet updated both the process record and the QM results recording table.
