MATDOC and Material Document Simplification in S/4HANA

S/4HANA Inventory Management consolidates material-document persistence into MATDOC, replacing the classic MKPF/MSEG physical persistence model while preserving legacy read compatibility through CDS compatibility mechanisms. MATDOC contains material-document line information with header-relevant attributes repeated/available as needed by the simplified model. New custom code should use released material-document CDS/APIs rather than designing direct writes or assuming MSEG is still physically updated.

What it is

ECC stored material document header in MKPF and items in MSEG, with additional inventory aggregates/index tables. S/4HANA redesigned MM-IM around MATDOC to reduce redundancy and exploit HANA, while legacy MKPF/MSEG reads can remain compatible through views/interfaces. The new structure changes performance and custom-code assumptions: a SELECT that depended on physical MSEG indexes/storage can behave differently, and custom updates to old tables are never valid. MATDOC also participates in archiving/summarization behavior specific to S/4HANA.

When to use it

Use released material-document APIs/CDS views for new inventory reporting and integration. Use MATDOC at technical support level when analyzing S/4HANA persistence and conversion/performance issues. During custom-code migration, identify direct MKPF/MSEG accesses, validate whether compatibility is sufficient, and redesign heavy/complex reports around released views. Do not force every simple legacy read to change without evidence, but do not create new tight coupling to old compatibility views.

How it fits the stack

MIGO/Fiori goods movement and BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE post inventory through application logic; MATDOC is persistence, not an update API. Accounting impact is represented in finance journal structures. Compatibility views preserve old field shapes for reads; CDS/application APIs present semantic models. Archiving object MM_MATBEL operates on MATDOC in S/4HANA.

A worked example

An ECC custom report joins MKPF/MSEG and several old aggregate tables to calculate material movements. After conversion it still compiles through compatibility, but runtime degrades on large history. The team profiles the query, identifies released material-document CDS views/MATDOC semantics and redesigns the report to select only required movement fields/date/material/plant. A posting interface continues using BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE—never INSERT MATDOC.

How to choose

  • Posting/change: always use standard goods-movement business APIs.
  • New read analytics: prefer released material-document CDS/API.
  • Legacy MKPF/MSEG reads: validate correctness/performance before deciding remediation priority.
  • Do not treat MATDOC as a drop-in public API just because it is the physical table.
  • Recheck archiving/history behavior for very large movement reports.

Common pitfalls

  • Saying MSEG is still a normal physical S/4HANA item table receiving new rows.
  • Updating MATDOC directly.
  • Selecting MATDOC without restrictive predicates because HANA is in-memory.
  • Assuming every MKPF/MSEG compatibility query has identical performance to ECC.
  • Ignoring accounting/valuation documents when reconciling material movement to Finance.

ECC, S/4HANA and clean core

MATDOC is specific to the S/4HANA simplified inventory model. SAP documentation states the former MKPF/MSEG model is replaced and compatibility is provided for legacy access. Clean-core extensions should use released business/data interfaces rather than persistence tables.

Whose problem this is

MM/Inventory functional teams own movement semantics; ABAP/data architects own read redesign/API use; conversion teams identify compatibility/performance impact; HANA/Basis supports tuning/archiving.
