SU24 vs SU53 vs STAUTHTRACE: SAP Authorization Troubleshooting
SU24 maintains authorization default/proposal data used when building PFCG roles; SU53 shows the current user's most recent failed authorization check in that session; STAUTHTRACE records authorization checks over a trace window with user/context detail. They solve different problems: role-design defaults, quick last-failure diagnosis and full runtime trace. A clean SU53 does not prove there was no authorization failure earlier in the process.

What it is
SU24 is design-time customizing for authorization checks/default values associated with transactions/services, helping PFCG propose relevant objects and field defaults. SU53 is a diagnostic snapshot after a failed AUTHORITY-CHECK; because it shows the last failed check for the user's current context, later checks/actions can overwrite what it would have shown. STAUTHTRACE is a trace facility designed to capture authorization checks for selected users/time, including successful/failed checks depending on configuration, making it far more reliable for complex Fiori/RFC/background flows.
When to use it
Use SU53 immediately after a simple reproducible SAP GUI authorization failure. Use STAUTHTRACE when SU53 misses the issue, several checks occur, the call runs in RFC/OData/background under a different user, or field-level analysis is needed. Use SU24 when maintaining role proposal/default design—not to grant the user access directly. After identifying a missing check, fix the role/design through PFCG/governance rather than repeatedly adding broad values.
How it fits the stack
AUTHORITY-CHECK in ABAP and framework authorization checks produce runtime evaluations against the user's authorization buffer. PFCG roles/profiles supply values. SU24 influences what role maintenance proposes for transactions/services, but it does not automatically authorize users. Fiori adds catalog/service layers but backend checks still appear in authorization traces when the backend user is reached. External/technical users require tracing the actual execution identity.
A worked example
A Fiori app returns 403. The business user checks SU53 in the frontend system and sees nothing useful because business logic runs in the S/4HANA backend under a propagated user. Security starts STAUTHTRACE in the backend for that user, reproduces the request and finds a failed object/field value. PFCG role design is corrected. SU24 is then reviewed only if the transaction/service proposal should be improved for future role maintenance.
How to choose
- Simple immediate GUI failure: try SU53 first.
- Remote/Fiori/background/complex multi-check flow: use STAUTHTRACE on the actual execution user/system.
- Role proposal/default issue: SU24.
- Fix the narrow missing business value/object rather than adding SAP_ALL/wildcards.
- Re-test after role generation/user comparison/buffer refresh as appropriate.
Common pitfalls
- Using SU24 as though it changes a user's authorization.
- Running SU53 long after the failing action and reading an unrelated later check.
- Tracing the developer/frontend user while backend execution uses another identity.
- Granting broad wildcards based on one failed trace without understanding business scope.
- Ignoring successful checks that reveal which field values the application actually tests.
ECC, S/4HANA and clean core
These tools remain central in S/4HANA private/on-premise. Fiori/OData increases the importance of identifying the correct backend user/system, while public cloud uses more managed role tooling. Backend authorization traces still matter wherever ABAP authorization checks execute.
Whose problem this is
Security teams own tracing/role fixes; application teams explain intended authorization objects/fields; Basis supports trace access; business owners approve scope. Developers should not 'fix' authorization errors by removing AUTHORITY-CHECK logic.
