Revenue Planning
Project Margin Forecasting and Revenue Risk
Forecast customer-project margin by combining current revenue outlook, cost-to-complete, commitments and commercial risk instead of comparing billed value to actual cost.
A project showed healthy margin because only 60% of planned labor had posted. The schedule was already 80% complete and remaining effort was underestimated. Updating cost-to-complete exposed a major forecast overrun early.
Revenue Planning for Customer Projects
Plan expected customer-project revenue separately from cost and billing, using sales or project information to create a realistic commercial outlook.
A consulting project had a fixed contract value but the internal revenue plan was spread evenly by month while billing depended on milestones. Cash and revenue forecasts became misleading. Aligning planning with realistic milestone timing improved forecasts.
