SAP Profile Parameters: RZ10, RZ11 and Dynamic Changes
SAP profile parameters control ABAP instance and system runtime behavior such as work-process counts, memory limits, timeouts and communication settings. RZ11 displays parameter documentation and current/default values and can change only dynamically switchable parameters at runtime. RZ10 maintains persistent profile configuration. A dynamic RZ11 change is not a substitute for updating the appropriate persistent profile when the value must survive restart.

What it is
ABAP instances read profile parameters during startup from system/default and instance-specific profile configuration. Parameters can be static, requiring restart, or dynamically changeable according to kernel metadata. RZ11 is primarily a display/documentation/runtime tool: it shows current value, default and parameter properties; for parameters marked dynamic it can change the active runtime value. RZ10 is the classic profile-maintenance transaction for persistent configuration and profile versions/activation. In modern operations, file-based/provider-managed methods and tools can supplement or restrict these transactions, but the distinction between runtime value and persistent startup configuration remains.
When to use it
Use RZ11 to inspect what value the running system is actually using and whether SAP marks it dynamic. Use RZ10 or the approved configuration mechanism to persist an authorized parameter change. Before changing memory/work-process/timeouts, identify the root cause and SAP-supported range/recommendation; parameters can hide application defects or destabilize the instance. In managed cloud/private editions, follow provider responsibility boundaries rather than modifying parameters directly.
How it fits the stack
Parameters influence work processes, memory areas, RFC/ICF limits, spool, locks and many kernel/application-server behaviors. Instance-specific values can differ across application servers; default/system profiles can establish broader defaults. RZ10 profile activation does not necessarily change a static parameter in a running instance until restart. RZ11's displayed current value is therefore critical when configuration files and runtime diverge.
A worked example
A timeout issue prompts someone to increase a parameter in RZ11. The change works until the next weekend restart, when the old timeout returns because the runtime-only change was never persisted. The team reviews parameter documentation, confirms it is dynamic, tests the higher value, then follows change control to update the correct persistent profile and verifies the value after restart. In another case, SAT reveals bad custom code and no parameter increase is approved.
How to choose
- Inspect documentation/current/default in RZ11 before any change.
- Determine whether parameter is dynamic and whether change is instance-specific or system-wide.
- Persist approved values through RZ10 or the platform's supported profile-management mechanism.
- Treat restarts as part of the plan for static parameters.
- Measure application/system impact before and after tuning.
Common pitfalls
- Changing a dynamic value in RZ11 and assuming it will survive restart.
- Editing profile files manually without version/change control.
- Increasing memory/work-process/timeouts to mask runaway custom code.
- Changing one instance and assuming every app server now has the same runtime value.
- Copying parameter recommendations from an old SAP release/kernel without checking current documentation.
ECC, S/4HANA and clean core
S/4HANA private/on-premise continues to use ABAP profile parameters, though cloud-managed offerings can restrict customer administration and SAP may manage infrastructure settings. HANA sizing does not eliminate ABAP memory/work-process parameters. Always check target-release/kernel documentation because parameter names, defaults and dynamic behavior can evolve.
Whose problem this is
Basis owns parameter governance, testing and persistence; ABAP/application teams supply evidence when an application drives resource pressure; infrastructure/HANA teams validate host capacity; change management approves production tuning.
